Period 7: 1890-1945

At the beginning of the 20th century, America was becoming a world power. This period begins with the Spanish-American War in 1898 and ends with World War II in 1945.  America shifted its relations with the rest of the world. In the years following the Civil War, America acquired Alaska from Russia (1867) and Hawaii (1898). After the Spanish-American War, America annexed the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico and continued its role in international affairs in Asia and Latin America. At home, America continued to be shaped by industrialization, urbanization and immigration and soon entered the Progressive Era. The effects of the Gilded Age led many Americans to seek reform in order to improve society and limit the power of big business. Their efforts were interrupted by World War I which lasted from 1914-1917 (America entered the war in 1917). Following World War I, the United States entered a boom period quickly followed by the Great Depression. The role of government increased during the 1930s under President Roosevelt and Nazi Germany invaded Poland in 1939 launching the world in war again.
